501® Original Shrink-to-Fit™ Jeans - Rigid

Raw, rough, and as pure as jeans can be, Shrink–to–Fit™ are the real deal. Most denim comes pre–shrunk, but our Shrink–To–Fit™ jeans do just what it says. Made from raw denim, they form to your unique body and movements over time. For the old school technique, buy your true size in the waist and go two sizes up in length. Wear them in your bathtub and keep them on to dry.

If Levis want to start to sell jeans again.I suggest they go back to making the original shrink to fit with the heavy weight core mill denim.
I brought my first pair in UK back in late 60,s 502.0117 zip fly.
then by 70,s into 501.0117 button fly. Never really liked the pre washed Levis that came next never fitted as well as STF,s.
When I saw they were making SFT,s again I brought a pair.
Biggest disappointment ever. The denim is thin and don't shrink like the original Denim.
LEVIS IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THE JEANS MARKET BACK GO BACK TO BASICS. MAKE LEVIS THAT ARE WANTED.Forget fashion statements.
Produce your Quality Originals and you will take back your market place As Number one in jeans world.

This is why I came here...to find out if what I just found in a new pair of 501 Levis is the ' norm' . Evidently, it is. No double-stiched inseam...not good. Material is thinner AND a few loose ends here and there. Shoddy workmanship that was not a trademark of Levi's previously.
I may be shopping for sturdier jeans elsewhere. Sad. I've worn Levi's for 40 years or more.

When I was 30, I wore a pair of 501s I'd bought in college. They were about 10 years old. At some point in my 30s, I bought a pair of 501s that I wore about 10 months before they wore out. Now I am in my 40s and I bought 3 pair for nostalgia's sake and when I washed them, they shrank into tights.
The best jeans in the world when they were made in the US. Now, inferior materials and manufactured Somewhere Else. Not worth my time.
Goodbye, Levis.

I too have been wearing Levi's 501 Original Shrink-To-Fit Jeans for over 30 years. They've always been the most durable, comfortable and well-fitting jeans a guy could get. Not too tight, not too loose. The fit has always been perfect. 501's are the ONLY jeans I buy or wear.
When I put on a freshly washed pair, I squat down with my legs slightly wider than shoulder width and kinda stretch them out so they fit perfectly. 1 of 2 pairs of 501's I bought 6 weeks ago ripped at the crotch and down my legs about 7 inches during this stretching routine of mine. I did notice that both pairs fit really small and they seemed to be made of a lighter fabric than the 501's I've always known and loved.
In the 30+ years I've been wearing these jeans, I've never had this happen to a pair of 501's with 6 weeks of wear on them. I am truly saddened by the poor quality of these jeans as of late.
I really hope that the top guys at Levi Strauss can do something to improve the quality of 501 Original Shrink-To-Fit Jeans because I am at a complete loss as to what brand of jeans i'll wear or buy for the next 30 years.

Oh Levi's!!! I've worn Levi's my whole life and really don't want to find a new brand! I can't afford to replace poorly manufactured jeans for myself and family every six months!! Please bring back your quality denim from the 50's-80's!! STF jeans are the best jeans ever when the quality is strong! SHORT strand cotton= thin denim. Please go back to your 14oz fabric! I've been completely loyal for 40+ years...heck, my dad even sold Levi's as a sales rep in the 70's!! My fingers are crossed, but my brain is not hopeful that anything will be done. Brand loyalty should still mean something to manufacturers!

I have been only wearing Levi shrink to fit rigid jeans for over 40 years. All I've bought in the last 3 years has been poor quality. They have all had up to a 1/2 inch light blue line going down the front and back of the jeans were the dye did not stick. The fit is still perfect. The material is thinner though. I have bought about 12 pairs and returned 10. I kept 2 that had a darker faded line than the others. My jeans in the past have usually lasted about 8 years. Maybe they just sell factory seconds in Alaska. Very disappointed.

Forgot to mention that the jeans made in Mexico and Egypt are often consider better quality then those made elsewhere (except maybe the USA, but Levi's has charged more for those for several years now, and since they're priced out of my budget range, I don't buy them.) Most of mine are made in Mexico nowadays.

The fabric weight of 501 STF's has definitely gone down and that's well documented. As for the shrinkage, I have to defend Levi's here. I used to purchase 501 STF's in the seventies and they would shrink to become well smaller then the tag size back then, also. Back then, the tags didn't even offer suggestions for which size you should buy, as they do today. Following the suggestions on the tag, they shrink as expected for me and I've never had them shrink more then expected (certainly nowhere near 5" in the waist.) I've also not seen the lines mentioned, although some do seem to prematurely show distress markings, such as creases, which don't look authentic.

i just returned 3 pr that i bought for my husband, he has been wearing them for at least 50+ yrs. these were made in egypt and shrunk abt 5" in the waist!! good thing i only washed 1 pr, just by the looks of them i was leary. i to used to wear the shrink to fit but zippered in the late 60's into the 80's. so i know the quality of the org shrink to fit. i don't see how they can be selling these as the original as they are anything but. very disappointed as well.

I wear a 32x32 in the original fit 501's non stretch denim. I purchased a pair of the STF Rigid because I was looking for a jean that would last for years. I have been wearing my size 32x34 STF Rigids for three months now and have washed them upon request of my wife. The first cold soak shrank the waist to a vanity size of 31 and the length to about a 33. I was able to stretch out the waist within about 4 days time. Not to comfortable during this break in though. Second cold soak and wash in the tube with minimal detergent yielded once again about a 31 waist but shrank the length to around a 32. I am afraid that if I cold soak these jeans again they will be too small in length. I am going to order a new pair but will opt for a pair of 33x36. Still recommend these jeans as they are fairly inexpensive.

Hey Charlie, I agree. I was so disappointed when I received my 2 pair of 501s in the mail. I have worn them for about 30 years, and I still have some from those days, though they are pretty worn. They were made from thick fabric, and when you bought them (my tags still say 30-30) you bought them knowing they were cut a few inches longer/larger, but they were designed to shrink to the size on the label. Now, I know my size and shape has shifted over the years, but I can still pack into those old 30-30s of mine. As soon as I washed my new 30-30s (which were made of much thinner fabric) they became too small and too short. Things change with time, but this change saddens me. I am just going to break down and switch these for 31 or 32 x 34's and see if I can still wear my old standard 501s for just a few more years. I do hope Levis is listening to this customer input. We older folks, who have known the product since when it was outstanding quality and a timeless classic, would probably pay a little more to be able to continue on with the jeans we have chosen over all others for the last 30-40 years. As for myself, I see no reason to choose the new 501s over any other jeans, and would probably be much more likely to shop a competitor's line for my next purchase.

Have been wearing original 501 shrink to fit levis since the 1960s, this current version is not the same jeans, should not be called original 501 levis. They are lighter and softer with less stitching and completely over priced, very disappointed. Levis has traded function and quality for fashion and looks. From now on I will be buying solid well made work pants and everyday wear pants from one of your top competitors, that I'm not supposed to mention here.

I have worn Levi's jeans for 40 years. Mostly 501s but also 505s. Seems like most of the different styles are made in a lightweight stretch fabric. The other day, for the first time in 40 years, I had a button hole tear. Just not the same quality. The only thing with close to the old heavy weight fabric is the 501s and even they seem lighter. Also, they are sized very differently. I have worn 33x36 for 15 years. They always fit great. The last pair I got shrank so badly I had to send them back. I got two pairs of 33x38. The inseam of both shrank on the first washing to equal the inseam of the pair of 33x36 I have had for 4 years. The waist on one is tight but butt/legs fit OK. The waist/butt/legs on the other pair is so tight it hurts my back to buckle and wear them. Levis used to be the brand that you could ALWAYS trust to be exactly the same very time. I have bought my last pair of Levis. Sad.

The expansion in butt and thigh has worked against a unique feel I had in wearing Levi's: they were part of you, hugged you firm but not skin tight, a natural second you. Whatever the motive or cause, it is hard for me to see how this helped the Co., except in profit. While they are still hugely successful, I wonder what the executives and designers think of the laments, based on former products, that you read in these reviews. I have a pair from decades ago with seven belt loops. The cotton has now worn to velvet softness. It takes a chunk of life to get jeans to this personal level.

I'm going to assume you know there's a difference between 501's and 501 shrink-to-fit jeans, but if you do not, then that would explain your shrinkage.
Like you, I've worn 501 STF's for 40 years and haven't noticed the severe shrinkage you mention. I see so many recent comments complaining about this, that I wonder if it's a new problem, although I've even ordered several recent pairs that didn't have this problem, either.
I have had problems with the button holes, but only with them being too tight. However, they loosen over time, so this isn't a major problem.
In my opinion, the butt and legs are too big, so if you think the waist is too tight, maybe you need to order a larger size? I believe the butt and leg openings used to be smaller, but now they seem made to fit people who probably should be wearing a relaxed fit jean, rather then 501's. This is a problem because it causes sagging, which can even be seen on the models here, but is much worse for me.

I've worn Levi's all my life. They are still great jeans, and I will continue to buy and wear them. However, they call these jeans "the real deal" in the product description, yet they are no longer built with the "real deal" design.
I am giving the new model of shrink to fits one star because Levi's has changed the design to include only a single stitched inseam and a correspondingly small hem. Given that the shrink to fits are all about capturing the classic Levi's style, they should be styled like the originals.
I have two pairs of shrink to fits, one which I purchased in 2013 and one which I purchased last week. Both are made in Egypt and are of a good and sturdy quality. However, my 2013 Levi's feature the original double stitched inseam and the original style hem while my new pair has only a single stitched inseam and a much smaller hem. This takes away from the classic look of the jeans.
If this was a review for my 2013 Levi's only, then I would give at least 4 stars out of 5. Please bring back the double stitched inseam and original hem!
Of course I would also like to see a return to an American-made product, but I realize that it is cost-prohibitive in today's market, and most of the company's offerings will consist of a foreign-made product. The high-quality American-made Levi's raw jeans are still available, but at a very premium price from Levi's Vintage Collection. I have noticed a market trend towards purchasing smaller volumes of higher quality items rather than a higher volumes of cheaper items, especially in men's wear. Hopefully Levi's will recognize this trend and expand its U.S. production so they may offer a less expensive American-Made pair of jeans in the future. I won't hold my breath, and I don't blame Levi's at all for this issue, but it would be a great change to see.
I recommend this product!

I guess my first post was too honest and was pulled. Poor quality and construction. Should have read the reviews before I bought new 501's and would have chosen another Brand. Thinner material with less stitching and hems than the pairs from a few years ago. You want to stay in business??? You may want to read some of these reviews and take them to heart. I will not be purchasing another pair for me or my family.

I have been wearing 501's for over 55 years and have worn the same size for at least the last 30 years.
This last batch (4 pair of Rigid 501's shrink to fit size 33-31) I just purchased are not the same Levis I have owned all these years. They did not shrink as much, they seem to be the relaxed fit style, they just don't fit the same and the material seems to be thinner.
These were made in Egypt and I don't remember buying ones that were made there before. Is this why the quality is so low?
All in all I am very dissapointed in your product.

I remember the days of a leather label on my Levis 501 STFs, when the red tag had a capital E and the outside seam was selvedge-edged. Those jeans would take forever to wear out... even with repeated washings.
Sadly the quality keeps going down. I would pay more, a lot more to be able to buy those jeans again. I found a dealer who carries your reproductions, but they are cost ridiculous, not just prohibitive. Wish Levis would live ip to their old standards and make in the USA again.
I recommend this product!

I have been buying and wearing Levi's 501 shrink to fit jeans since 1981. I usually buy them in batches of 4-6 pairs at a time, So I only have buy new jeans every 2-3 years. The last bunch I bought were great. I just bought a batch of 4 pairs and I am not sure that I will buy Levi's again. The quality seems to have gone down on the construction of the jeans. My guess is to make it cheaper for Levi's to manufacture them. They are already not made in the USA, but now cutting corners on the way they are made is disappointing to say the least. They do shrink the same but the way they come out of the wash is terrible. All wrinkled and creased that leave fade lines in the fabric that will never fade into the jeans. The double reinforced inseam is now a cheaper single seam that just doesn't even look good. The leg hem is smaller and isn't what it used to look like.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I compared these to my levis vintage clothing 1947 501 and the inside seam is the same, compared to a pair i bought 5 yrs ago, there is a difference, like u said there is a double seam. If you arent familiar with levis manufacturing techniques u truly cant judge on looks alone. Wear the jeans, beat them up torture them, let that be the deciding factor. I've never been let down by a pair of 501s and since I bought my pair of stfs i havent worn another pair, I love them.

I bought a pair of shrink-to-fit 501 jeans, true size waist, 2"longer. I wore them without washing the first 2 months, then rinsed them with a garden hose and wore them until dry. PERFECT fit! Do not put them in a washer or dryer, they will come out wrinkled and color will be just a mess. If you have done that, you might be able to make them look better by wearing them wet, let them dry while wearing them ( Weather in Palm Springs is perfect for that ), the use sandpaper to even out the color.
I agree on the quality going down !

These truly are great jeans. There is nothing else like the 501 STF, BUT there is a problem. These jeans will fit totally different depending on where they are made. The 501's that are made in Egypt are longer per size and have a much roomier cut, great for people with a muscular leg structure. The 501's made in Mexico are shorter per size and have a noticeably slimmer cut, obviously better for folks who enjoy the slimmer fitting jean. This has been my experience over multiple pairs and it is always the same. It is easier for me just to buy them from the Levi's store. Then I get just what I want. Hopefully this helps in some way.
I recommend this product!

I should have clarified, but yes going to the store and looking at the labels. I am lucky I suppose in that I am within driving distance of a Levis brand store. Just as an FYI, I have seen 36" length STF's at Sears as well as some of the more "Western" style clothing stores as a regular stock item. I do agree with you in the fact that most department stores, if they stock them at all do not stock longer than a 34" leg. I am 6' 1" and the 36" leg works for me, provided they are the Egypt made version. The version from Mexico end up to short, because they started to short even though they are tagged the same. In the end however it is all part of what makes 501 STF's such a journey.

I assume you mean physically going to a store location and looking at the labels to detrmine where they are made. That may be a problem for those over 6'-0" tall. I have yet to find a store that stocks s.t.f. 501's with inseams longer than 34". It seems to me they don't understand the concept of "shrink to fit" and that a 34" inseam actually means a 31" inseam. I have actually written emails to a couple of major retail stores in hopes of getting them to stock my 36"x38" size. ( I'm 6'-2" and usually buy 34"x34" in all other pants / jeans and that size is always found in stores). The response to my emails indicates they just don't get it and claim it would be an "unusually tall size" that wouldn't sell.

Yes, we learned the same thing. Bought 3 pairs of identical size, and the fit varies from snug to baggy depending upon where they came from.

I have purchased Levi 501's STF from several retailers over a period of 50+ years and lately have been disappointed each time. The price keeps going up, and the quality keeps going down. Every pair that I have bought have been cared for as directed. They have stripes and ridges going every which way. No amount of anything gets the stripes to go away and the ridges to be less visible.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Now Im afraid to buy these, rather than find some in a store to check them first, the last few pairs I bought several years back were great, I got the my usual length but 1" larger waist, put them in a stream for a few hours put them on wet and wore them til they dried, no problem. But after hearing about the thinner material not to mention the price up quality down issue, Im not sure I want to bother replacing my old ones. I will look for a local retailer here in Rochester, NY before placing an order.

I noticed that the inside seam lines are different for the most recent 501 rigid STF. The ones I bought last year had double seam lines running down the middle from the crotch (on the inner leg side). But the ones I just got in the mail have just one seam. And they are still using the old photos for the Rigid. Check out my uploaded photo for comparison. Also, the back pocket is no longer chain stitched on the inside. It's just single stitching.
I normally wear a 32x30. Last year, I bought a 33x31 STF 501 and shrunk them down to size using lukewarm water. I've enjoyed the whole process of wearing them without washing them for months, then gently dipping them in cold or warm water and have them drip dry. They are very comfortable, but now a bit loose. So I'm starting over with a new pair of 32x32. We'll see how these fit in a year!
I recommend this product!

Have just noticed fhe difference of current fhotos as compared to the earlier ones. Looks like they're gradually making the 501's cheaper and cheaper while trying to sell at the same price.

Levi’s Marketing is screwing up Big Time in my opinion! I have been wearing 501® ORIGINAL SHRINK-TO-FIT since at least the early 60s, if not the late 50s. I know what I want, I just did not know I Had to Have ALL the words correct.
Searching for “Levi’s Original 501“ on Levi’s website comes up with 31 items listed in 501® Original Fit Jeans. The first 11 jeans displayed are 501 Original Fit Jeans, the twelfth, thirteenth and fifteenth displays are 501® ORIGINAL SHRINK-TO-FIT. 501® WasteLess™ for EKOCYCLE™ the fourteenth display item. 501® Original Fit Jeans are available in 29 colors with fabric weights varying from 12.5 oz., 12 oz., 11.75 oz., 11.25 oz., 11 oz., 9.5 oz., 9 oz., 8 oz.
Unfortunately, if “501® SHRINK-TO-FIT“ on the left side of the Levi’s Product Index, is clicked on, seven items are displayed. The top three have the same fabric color and weights available in 501® Original Fit Jeans. The next three jeans displayed are 501® ORIGINAL SHRINK-TO-FIT in Rigid (THE Original color), Black and Metal. All three fabrics are 12.5 oz. raw, unwashed heavyweight denim that I remember from years ago, the ACTUAL product I wanted! “Levi's® Red Tab™ 501® jeans, the original fit that's still going strong after 140 years.“
Marketing is making it almost impossible to find what I want. I had to go to other sites to find the “Secret Style Code # 005010000 , Enter 005010000 into Levi’s Search Box to find “ 501® ORIGINAL SHRINK-TO-FIT“ in Rigid color on the Levi’s Site.
As a Welder, later as a Maintenance Mechanic, I was going through 2 ½ pair a year. Now that I am retired, I am curious to see how long they last.
I recommend this product!

Looks like the first of a new batch. Lighter fabric, single leg seam. Most of all completely weird dye. Seems to be wearing in a spiderweb pattern (see attached photo). I religiously turn jeans inside out prior to washing....but maybe the new low water washer/dryer is to blame? After fifty years of wearing 501 shrink to fits the latest pair is very poor. Saddens me to have to write such a negative review! Seems like Levi should care more about this classic product. I'll try another couple times before searching for an alternate jean....what a drag!
No, I do not recommend this product.

Washed jeans and followed instructions. Came out of washer so wrinkled that I hung one pair to line dry. The two that went into dryer(according to directions) came out horridly wrinkled. I have bought these jeans for my hubby for many many years and never been so disgusted! I do not iron jeans, but these need hours of ironing! The line dried jeans had fewer wrinkles but not what I have come to expect! Terrible product, thin flimsy! Described as rough rugged, more like thin and wrinkly!
No, I do not recommend this product.
